Housing, commercial buildings and public space each ask something different of a design, and each sits in a different context. So the work starts by looking at what surrounds the site, how people get in and out, and who will be using it, before the plan and the massing are fixed.

We design buildings to sit comfortably in their surroundings and to answer what the people inside actually need, whether they are living there, working there, or meeting each other there.

House

A house is designed from the way a family actually lives: where the sun and the wind come from, the view from inside out to the garden, and privacy from the neighbours. Those three set where the openings go, which way each room faces, and how the house sits on the land.

Commercial and high-rise

The ground floor of a commercial building or a high-rise has to invite people in from the street, while the floors above need light and outlook spread evenly across every level. The building does two jobs at once: it is where the business runs, and it is what the brand is remembered by on that street.

Public space

Good public space draws people in without anyone having to invite them. Shade, somewhere to sit, and paths that connect are what make people stay, and what turns the place into one the neighbourhood thinks of.

Factory and warehouse

A factory or warehouse is a workplace where people spend the whole day. Daylight, ventilation and a plan with short walking distances are designed for the people working there as much as for the production line.

Buildings serve different groups at different times. Owners, customers, staff and families each see space from a different angle, so this method starts with questions about people and turns the answers into plan, light, circulation and room size.

Start with the people who use it

The first questions are who will use the building, what they will do there, and how many hours they spend in it each day. Those answers shape room sizes, circulation and which areas should open or close.

Make arrival clear

Entrances, halls, stairs and the points where people turn into rooms should read simply. A good arrival sequence lets the building welcome people from the street or garden without relying on too many signs.

Place light by use

Natural light should not enter every room in the same way. Bedrooms need softer light, work rooms need clarity, and retail areas need merchandise to be easy to see, so light is planned from each room's activity.

Let the plan accept change

Many buildings will change users or business models over time. The plan needs adaptable areas that do not disturb key rooms, structure or circulation, so the building can stay useful beyond the first brief.
